You thought your civic responsibilities ended last month? Think again.

Here comes Coast Weekend’s Readers’ Choice Awards, your chance to vote for the best dining, activities and businesses in the Columbia-Pacific region — that is, Clatsop, Pacific and north Tillamook counties. And you get to help build the ballot.

One voter drawn at random wins a $50 gift card.

Who’s your favorite chef or server? Your most trusted mechanic? Your go-to venue for live theater? The finest places to golf, hike, birdwatch and enjoy a cheap date? Give ’em a shout-out in the 2018 Readers’ Choice, which runs Friday, Dec. 7, through Sunday, Jan. 6.

The first two weeks is the nomination period, when you can suggest nominees in each category. Your entries add to our seeded ballot, which carries over nominees from previous years. To the dining categories, we have added Best Food Cart and Best Wine Bar, and to the business category (you knew it had to happen sometime) Best Bud, i.e., pot shop.

This two-week period is also a time to tell us if the ballot contains errors — if a nominated business has closed, say, or belongs in a different category. (Will some readers conflate barber shops and hair salons? Probably.)

The voting starts Saturday, Dec. 22, and runs until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6. (To ensure one-person one-vote, we cross-reference emails, names, addresses and other markers.)

We’re still accepting paper ballots this year — indeed, readers who submitted paper ballots were a crucial voting bloc last year, in some cases flipping first- and second-place winners. Paper ballots can be submitted anytime before the contest ends, but the earlier the better.

First-, second- and third-place winners will be revealed in the Feb. 7 issue of Coast Weekend.

In addition, The Daily Astorian will hold an awards ceremony at a date and location to be announced.
